For students

We recruit for reasoning.

Applications for 2026–2027 are now closed. Please check back for our next hiring cycle.

Recruitment process

Five steps. Two documents.

This is the process when applications are open. Follow our LinkedIn or Instagram for the dates of the next cycle.

  1. 01

    Explore Available Positions

Review the hiring package for each open position to learn about its responsibilities, expectations, and time commitment. Identify the role that best aligns with your interests, strengths, and professional goals.

  2. 02

    Submit a Cover Letter

Prepare a one-page cover letter in PDF format outlining your interest in management consulting, what motivates you to join SMCC, and the perspectives or experiences you would bring to the team.

  3. 03

    Attach Your Résumé

Submit an updated résumé in PDF format, preferably one page (two pages maximum). There is no minimum GPA requirement, and previous consulting or case interview experience is not necessary.

  4. 04

    Interview

Selected applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss their experiences, motivations, problem-solving approach, and ability to collaborate. Applicants for consulting engagement roles may also complete a case interview to demonstrate their analytical thinking and structured reasoning.

  5. 05

    Onboarding & Integration

Successful applicants will join SMCC's onboarding program, gaining an introduction to our operations, professional expectations, and consulting fundamentals. Members will then begin contributing to their respective portfolios or engagement teams, where applicable.

Selection criteria

Four things we actually assess.

Interviewers score against these and nothing else. There is no hidden fifth criterion.

  • 01

    Structured thinking

You break an unfamiliar problem into parts before reaching for an answer. We can teach frameworks; we cannot teach the instinct to organise.

  • 02

    Intellectual honesty

You say when the data does not support the recommendation, including when the recommendation was yours.

  • 03

    Genuine curiosity

You want to understand how an unfamiliar business actually makes money, not just how to describe it in a deck.

  • 04

    Reliability

A client engagement has a deadline that does not move for a midterm. We recruit for people who plan around that.

Questions

Before you apply.

No. Any registered UBC student can apply, from any faculty. All programs are welcome — undergraduate, Master's, MBA and PhD.

No. Members are trained on the fundamentals before any client contact, and the first interview round is a conversation rather than a case. Bringing a different background is an advantage here, not a gap.

Not yet. We are opening our engagement program now, which is why early clients get unusual attention and a say in how the program works. Our speaker series and workshops are already running.

A one-page cover letter as a PDF describing your interest in management consulting and your motivation to join SMCC, plus your résumé as a PDF — one page preferred, two at most.

It is aimed at both. SMCC was founded by MBA students with a decade or more of professional experience, and graduate members remain central to how teams are staffed and supervised.

It varies by program. Workshops and the speaker series are drop-in; an engagement is the heaviest commitment and is scoped with you before you join a team.

Send us a question in the meantime — we answer every message, and asking one has never counted against an applicant.
